“Fall in love with someone who is both your safe place and your biggest adventure.” – Bianca Sparacino
Oh man, how do I start off this blog post. What an incredible wedding to be a part of. It is pretty evident that I love the bush so I was over the moon when Meghan and James contacted me to shoot their safari elopement at the amazing Ulusaba Private Game Reserve in the Sabi Sands.
How they met: “We met in Houston, Texas at a pool party BBQ on Memorial Day Weekend. I am originally from Houston and James is originally from England, but was working in Houston at the time. We hit it off chatting at the pool and went out with friends that night in Midtown and the rest is history …”
How they got engaged: “I thought he was going to propose on a trip to Maui that I had won from work, but James had other plans. We were going to Italy for one of his friend’s weddings the following month, and we decided to make a holiday of it driving ourselves through Florence, Sienna, Tuscany and Rome. I had a feeling it was coming because he didn’t want to leave the engagement ring in the hotel and carried a brief case with him everywhere which was absolutely hilarious. When we were in Tuscany, he got a driver who spoke very little English to take us to some vineyards in a vintage Mercedes Benz. We went to three vineyards that day enjoying gorgeous Brunello di Montalcino wines and he proposed at the last stop! The day was beyond beautiful and it was absolutely a day to remember!”
Meghan and James and had a relaxing start to their day getting ready in separate rooms. Their intimate ceremony was held on the lower deck with the most amazing views of the Sabi Sands below. The exchanging of vows and rings was accompanied by the grunts of the rutting impala. As Meg and James signed their marriage certificate we were treated to the amazing singing of the ladies that work at Ulusaba. The last song they sang was so catchy and was called No More Turning Back (which we all had in our heads throughout the couple shoot and game drive and we were singing away on the back of the game viewer).
After the ceremony we headed down the hill for some couple photos in the bush and we experienced the most amazing African sunset. We then bumped (almost literally) into a sweet leopardess and followed her antics for a while before heading to what can only be described as one of the most romantic dinner set up under the stars that I have ever seen.
Elopement photography to me is not just the pretty ceremony location followed by a couple shoot, it is about capturing the day in a way that the nearest and dearest of the bride and groom get a real sense of the day, a feeling that they were a part of the celebrations.
Meg & Jim, I hope you enjoy going through your wedding day story with each other and your friends and family. It was definitely one that I will be remembering for years to come and thank you for all the laughs.
No More Turning Back!
Kind words from Meghan & James: “Working with Megan was a dream from start to finish! Since we had the wedding abroad, it was so helpful to have an initial Skype session and keep in touch up to the wedding! She provided tons of useful information for getting married in South Africa and had tons of great tips for our trip as well. She also had tons of recommended suppliers/vendors which was appreciated as well. On the day everything was natural and so much fun! I think we laughed the whole day and we didn’t feel uncomfortable once! Normally, we are quite awkward infront of the camera, but she made everything fun and just captured us doing our thing. If you aren’t a fan of cheesy and want a natural style – Megan is your girl! She has such an eye for great shots, is so kind and extremely fun to work with and was a massive part of making our day so special! Thank you, Megan!!!”
